Fishing
There's no doubt that from Edwardian times it was fishing which made us famous - certainly amongst those who discovered the secret route to Stanley.
The "catch" phrase amongst guests was:
"Catch a fish, have a good time. Don't catch a fish, and have a better time, while
reflecting ....... that no man can lose what he never had."
The 2008 season got underway as ever on January 15. From all reports the day could have been better but hopes are that the slow start will develop and 2008 see a better season than last year!
This year also saw the re-introduction of the “Tayside Trophy”. In the past the Trophy was awarded to the Fisher with the heaviest catch on Salmon Season Opening Day. This year will see the name of Marcus Ogilvy added to the Trophy for his 14lb springer caught on the Dunkeld House Hotel Beat. Jim Ferrie was at the Hotel to accept the Trophy on behalf of Marcus and the Beat. The Trophy stays at the Hotel but a certificate and some malt whisky will find its way to both the Fisher and the Beat Hut!
Here at The Tayside Hotel we can arrange Salmon fishing on several of the more well-known beats of The Mighty River Tay. Availability is, as ever, strictly limited so if you are interested contact us with your preferred dates and we’ll do the leg-work for you.
We can also provide you with light packed lunches to take away with you after breakfast or full Fisherman's Picnics (including such choices as steak & veg pie, lasagne, wine, beers) can be pre-ordered and delivered to the Beat Hut of your choice - please contact us for an orderform.

Shooting
Many types of shooting, stalking and hunting are available in the immediate area and the hotel can help put together a great package for an individual or a group. Do enquire in advance as while you can shoot something in Scotland 365 days a year, some opportunities are seasonal, you may require to observe certain formalities especially if you are bringing guns from overseas, and as we work with local agents plenty of notice is desirable so that you will not be disappointed. In some cases a minimum number of participants is required.
Choose from first class bird shooting with driven pheasant and grouse, rough shooting, woodcock and some unbelievable goose shooting. There is also deer stalking for red, roe, sika and fallow deer together with a wealth of other sporting activities you can combine such as golf, fishing, hill walking and Munro climbing.
